MNPL

The Machinists Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL) is the political arm of the union in the United States.  The MNPL needs your support as a steward.  You may wonder why the union is in politics.  Laws passed by the state and federal governments can weaken the union and take away the gains we have won in our contracts.  There are many laws that affect our members; the Social Security Act, tax laws, unemployment compensation laws and similar legislation.  We can’t get good laws passed unless friendly candidates are elected to Congress and sate offices. Actions taken in congress affect our efforts to clothe, feed, shelter, and educate our families. The politicians we elect have the power to decide our tax bill, whether the corner station has gasoline, and whether our air is fit to breathe and our water fit to drink.

The MNPL was founded in 1947 to aid the election of those friendly candidates. Our local MNPL committee register voters provide information on candidates voting records, collect money for campaigns, and help get out the vote on Election Day.  MNPL is non-partisan.  It supports both republican and democratic parties when their voting records show that they have voted for laws in the public interest.  MNPL needs your help to reach the members. The MNPL is supported by voluntary contributions and works to elect labors friends..  There is NO portion of members dues used to fund the MNPL.  As leaders of the union we need to get the information to the members and explain how political action benefits them.  This means that we must be registered to vote and should be contributing members to the MNPL.  If we want labor friendly legislation in our government we need to be able to lobby with more than just your vote, our legislators need to be able to rely on your financial support. Thousands of lobbyists work round the clock to get special treatment for big business, bankers, oil producers and other wealthy interests.  When they get their way we the worker's pay.

The local legislative committee of LL2515 is actively involved in the process of political education.  This is done in a non-partisan way to ensure that the interests of our members are best being served by our elected officials on Local, State and Federal levels.  The committee remains clear of personal issues; as well as issues that really have no bearing on members of our Local as a whole.  Your support for MNPL is greatly needed both as a contributor as well as an educator of this worthwhile program to the membership.
