New Mexico Local 2515 Scores Organizing Win

Eighty-five workers at C-Martin, who perform service contract work at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, have voted overwhelmingly to join the IAM.

Local 2515 organizing Chairman Randy Rodriguez led the campaign, and brought home the win.  “This is a great example of the talent and dedication that is in our Local Lodges,” said Western Territory GVP Lee Pearson, “Randy took hold of this campaign and joined with DBR Bud Duryea to win this thing.  This is great teamwork.”

GLR Rod Weigand assisted with the campaign, which was the second time the workers had reached out to the IAM. “During the campaign, the company fired one of our campaign leaders and tried to discourage the workers with threats and other intimidating tactics, but the workers stuck together and the vote came down exactly in line with the ‘Yes’ petition signers,” said Weigand. “Our program really proved to be accurate, and Randy and Bud worked it perfectly.”

The Importance of Organizing

After many years of struggle and sacrifice, the workers of America pressed politicians to enact a law that protects and guarantees your rights to form and assist a Union.  This law is commonly called the National Labor Relations Act.  The Act also established the National Labor Relations Board, the body that administers the law.  Since the law went into effect in 1935 millions of workers have voted by secret ballot elections to demand that employers recognize their Unions.  In turn Unions have raised wages and improved benefits.  Unions have provided the dignity and job security that all workers deserve through collective bargaining.  America has become a better country thanks to their efforts and determination.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO welcomes your assistance and encourages your involvement in the IAM organizing program.  We all bear the responsibility for growth and the betterment of the lives of workers, families and friends.  I have the privileged title of  “Organizer”.  Although I realize I’m only one,  I’m reaching out in unity and encourage each Union member to step up to the privilege of organizing those who lack benefits of Unionism, in order that they through negotiations may be able to share our same Union benefits.

Please contact me with any future campaign leads.  I offer my experience and willingness to bring justice on the job to as many people as possible.  Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

Good day sisters and brothers,

I hope that this note finds all of you healthy and prepared for the upcoming holidays.  This note is sent to ask you to help us with increasing our number of members who are sponsoring members of the MNPL.  MNPL is the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, and is funded only by voluntary contributions from IAM members.  There is no money from anyone’s dues put into the MNPL fund, so it is totally dependant upon us.  The Western Territory has traditionally been the leader in the number of sponsoring members, and we need your help to stay number one.

Being a sponsoring member requires a minimum donation of twenty dollars, the WT has had a tradition of asking that we become 10-10 members, where we donate ten dollars and ten hours of service each year.  I would hope that every officer and steward would see the importance of MNPL, and would participate.  Please forward this note to your e-mail lists, post the info below on your websites, and encourage everyone to participate.  We need to protect the gains we win at the bargaining table, and to do that we need to have legislators who understand and are friendly to working families.

Thank you for your cooperation on this matter, and please have happy and safe holidays.

Kevin

MNPL Launches Into Cyberspace

IAM members can now make voluntary contributions to the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL) online. MNPL is one of the largest political action committees in the United States and supports political candidates who promote working family issues.

“This is a great opportunity for IAM members to become sponsoring members of MNPL, just ten dollars per year,” said IAM President Tom Buffenbarger.

“With this new online capability, it will be easy for IAM members to pool their resources for a stronger voice in legislative halls across the country.”

To access this new online tool, look for the MNPL bar at www.goiam.org.
